In October 2023, we began collaborating with Healing Justice London (HJL) in support of their inaugural ‘Rehearsing Freedoms’ festival. As a first stage, we provided an ethics review of their proposed research with festival participants, offering questions that took into account the historic violence of research for marginalised communities; how their research process might also try to rehearse freedom from this history – its extraction, distortion, damage – by being as imaginative, eclectic, participatory and communal as possible within the given constraints; clarity as a disability justice issue, particularly in the participant-facing documents. As a second stage, we became founding members of HJL’s inaugural Research Ethics & Accountability Group to prototype infrastructures and processes that approach research ethics and accountability as an opportunity for counter-colonial worlding.
